Annie Proulx tells the story behind "Brokeback Mountain"

Annie Proulx describes her reaction to Ennis (Heath Ledger) & Jack (Jake Gyllenhaal) on the screen.
Jake Gyllenhaal's Jack wasn't the same as the character in the short story for her. She saw the Jack in the short story as "jumpier, homely." But she liked Jake Gyllenhaal's portrayal of Jack. She described his "sensitivity and subtleness" in the role as "just huge." Jake Gyllenhaals gives his scenes in the movie a "quicksilver feel."
Heath Ledger is "almost really beyond deescription," getting inside the story more deeply than she, herself did! She describes Heath Ledger as moving "inside the skin of the character."
