Correspondence, Early Book Drafts, Notebooks, Sketches for The Shipping News, Brokeback Mountain and Other Works Now Available to Researchers in The Henry W. and Albert A. Berg Collection of English and American Literature

“I am, of course, very pleased that my notes, manuscript, sketches, letters and photographs have gone to the Berg Collection of The New York Public Library,” said Ms. Proulx. “What writer would not be honored to be in the company of Walt Whitman, Mark Twain, Thoreau, Saul Bellow, Nabokov, Jack Kerouac, Virginia Woolfe, Marianne Moore, Paul Auster and W. H. Auden? To me there is an odd sense of balance that material dealing with some of the most rural landscapes in North America will reside in our major city. Aside from the pages directly related to my writing, the letters, emails, financial reports to and from agents, publishers, editors and translators may be useful to future historians and scholars examining this period in American publishing and literature. We are currently undergoing major changes in the way we regard intellectual property and literary work; some of anxieties of that metamorphosis are reflected in my archive.”

The collection includes an early notebook (1987-89) of draft ideas for Proulx’s first novel, Postcards, which won a Pen-Faulkner Award for Fiction. Her most famous novel, the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Shipping News, is represented by 3,662 pages of typescript, many with holograph revision and correction, along with screenplay adaptation pages and correspondence. A 1993 typescript bears heavy holograph revisions in purple ink. Early drafts (1994) of the novel Accordion Crimes total about 1,000 pages.

A notebook containing original manuscript ideas for Proulx’s short story “Brokeback Mountain” is included in the collection, along with 21 typescripts under a variety of working titles including “Bulldust Mountain,” “Whiskey Mountain,” and “Swill-Swallow Mountain.” Three corrected typescript drafts of Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana’s screenplay adaption of the story are included, along with legal documentation and clippings.

The Berg Collection was established for the use of scholars and researchers. Conservation concerns, as well as other demands on staff time, require that we limit the use of our materials to this group.

We do, however, attempt to satisfy the general public's interest in our holdings through interpretive exhibitions and group presentations. If your group (minimum 8 persons, maximum 20) would like to schedule a presentation with the Curator, please contact him

This is truly wonderful news, not only for the honor it brings, but for the fact that this wealth of material will be available for future generations to mine. Of particularly fascinating interest is this:

. . . A notebook containing original manuscript ideas for Proulx’s short story “Brokeback Mountain” is included in the collection, along with 21 typescripts under a variety of working titles including “Bulldust Mountain,” “Whiskey Mountain,” and “Swill-Swallow Mountain.” . . .

I look forward to learning more about our favorite subject as the result of future studies into this archive.
Congratulations Ms. Proulx  :c)  :cr)

"Swill-Swallow Mountain" - the mind reels!

Dear Ethan, concerning the thread, ennisjack.com chronology, past, present & future, there's something I would like to know, and I post my question here, because i couldn't do it in the other thread ( I saw no quote or no reply link). Concerning the collective thank you project started by LuvJackNasty in 2006, I understand that you gave an exemplar to Ang Lee during this special evening, and send the rest to the cast and crew; what kind of feedback did you get from the actors, from Annie proulx ? In the thread, you said that a video was made at the New York festival and that you made a speech, but when I click to the link nothing appears on screen, is that normal ? I would have loved to hear your speech! :)

Dear Forever, thanks for the question. Yes we did give Ang Lee, Annie Proulx, and Diana Osana (I believe) the booklet containing posts and info about this forum. I haven't received any feedback from them.

As for the video, let me check if it is still there.

Found it. Please check this thread

Ethan, thank you soooooo much for the link! <^( Your speech was so moving! And Annie kept the thank you book in her hands the whole evening! I wonder sometimes why I didn't discover BBM in 2005 when the film was release on screen! I was mostly at home I guess, cause my daughter was still a baby! How would I have loved to see BBM on big screen!!! Thank you again, :^^)

I agree, that video is awesome! I was very moved, too. Annie Proulx is such a special person for us, Brokies!
Forever, I'm sure that someday we will have the opportunity to meet Ennis and Jack on big screen!! ;)

Here is an article that is no surprise to brokies. We knew Annie had trouble with some fans in the past. We knew there were three characters in Brokeback, homophobia being the pink elephant in the room.

Here is what she said.

But the problem has come since the film. So many people have completely misunderstood the story. I think it’s important to leave spaces in a story for readers to fill in from their own experience, but unfortunately the audience that “Brokeback” reached most strongly have powerful fantasy lives. And one of the reasons we keep the gates locked here is that a lot of men have decided that the story should have had a happy ending. They can’t bear the way it ends—they just can’t stand it. So they rewrite the story, including all kinds of boyfriends and new lovers and so forth after Jack is killed. And it just drives me wild. They can’t understand that the story isn’t about Jack and Ennis. It’s about homophobia; it’s about a social situation; it’s about a place and a particular mindset and morality. They just don’t get it. I can’t tell you how many of these things have been sent to me as though they’re expecting me to say, Oh great, if only I’d had the sense to write it that way. And they all begin the same way—I’m not gay, but . . . The implication is that because they’re men they understand much better than I how these people would have behaved. And maybe they do. But that’s not the story I wrote. Those are not their characters. The characters belong to me by law.

More coverage on Annie and her interview with The Paris Review back in 2009.

Ms. Proulx wrote the libretto for an opera by Charles Wuorinen based on the story that had its premiere last year, a project she said she had considered declining.

“But then I figured that one of these idiots who loves happy endings would come along and start messing with it,” she said. “I want to keep the story as it is. It’s a strong story and it shouldn’t be mangled into everybody lives happily ever after. Not that that could happen in an opera.”

Annie Proulx Gave One of the Best National Book Award Speeches in Recent Memory

Annie recently won the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters at the National Book Award Ceremony. Here's a link to a story about it in Vulture, seems that old Annie, now 82, still has her wits about her and enough energy to give folks a kick. Go Annie.

http://www.vulture.com/2017/11/annie-proulx-national-book-award-speech.html (http://www.vulture.com/2017/11/annie-proulx-national-book-award-speech.html)

Here's a quote from the NY Times report of the event, Anne Hathaway presented the award to Annie which must have been an interesting event in itself!

"Oscar winner Anne Hathaway presented a lifetime achievement medal to Annie Proulx and performed an act of anti-name dropping, confiding that she and the author had never met. Hathaway starred in the film adaptation of Proulx's "Brokeback Mountain," playing a character who barely existed in the original story. Hathaway called Proulx an "epic, singular talent" whose fictional creations were vivid to Hathaway, like people she had met.

Proulx was grateful for her award and dire about the times, which she called "Kafkaesque." She lamented tribal politics, "flickering threats of nuclear war," environmental destruction and a shift to what she called "viral direct democracy, cascading over us in a garbage-laden tsunami of raw data."

Still, she noted the longing for old notions of truth and community.

"The happy ending beckons and we keep on hoping for it," she said."
