Mountain visits in mythology
« on: Jan 30, 2006, 11:55 PM »
It's interesting, I have been watching a program on PBS (public television, not post brokeback...   ;)  ) about the bible and they had a section about how many of the stories involve someone going to a mountain for wisdom, like Moses etc.  And in Moses case he was then not allowed into the promised land, he had his face time with the big guy instead.  maybe that is like Jack, he had his ulitmate joy and then had to leave.  But anwyays, it's very common, to go to a mountain, which is like being closer to God and heaven.  And then returning changed.  In the hero journey's the usual idea was they would return to teach the world.  So Jack and Ennis return to teach us to love each other more.

Cool. And here the Force of Nature comes in...
This thing with mountain visits are universal but I can't come to think of any at the moments. I don't know my mythology well enought I guess ;)

Today, I've actually had the theme "do we use the BBM movie in the same way as priests and others are reading the bible?" in my head. I don't mean to offend anyone by speaking of the bible and comparing them. But I use different aspects of the story in BBM and apply it to myself and relationships that I and other people around me have. Isn't that a way that priests use the bible? To point certain questions out etc?

then there is the saying "if Mohammed cannot come to the mountain then the mountain must come to Mohammed"

interesting analogies to do with  mountains but they might just be vestigal memories, mountains being dangerous and mysterious places in our ancient pre-history..
