Topic: the word "fun"

I thought about something last night regarding the use of the word fun in bbm

It's said by both Cassie and Ennis in that goodbye scene [ennis:  I probably wasn't much fun anyway, Cassie:  Girls don't fall in love with fun


But, also, isn't it used by Ennis in his last goodbye scene with Jack?

Ennis (after dropping the bombshell that he can't get away till Novemember):  Maybe we can get that [hunting shack???] we had fun that one year, didn't we?

So, for those with better memories than mine:  Am I right?  Does Ennis use the word fun?  I hope so, it makes me smile to think him talking about doing something with Jack that he remembers as "fun."

And it's interesting that it's in both the goodbyes (not that they are comparable)

I'm sure you're right about Ennis saying "fun" in their last scene together, when he's trying to placate Jack.

Don't quote me, but I think the quote is actually..."we had a good time that year." But I'll just have to see the film again now to find out!

Don't quote me, but I think the quote is actually..."we had a good time that year." But I'll just have to see the film again now to find out!

I just looked it up in the screenplay, and you're right.  He says "good time," not "fun."  Maybe I'd better pay more attention next viewing!

Yes, it was "good time" in the movie.  I remembered that last night after my post.  It's so sad and so poignant that the only time Ennis does have a good time are those rare times with Jack.

Yes, Ennis does say 'good time' not 'fun' when he meets Jack for the last time.  But I'm sure they had lots of fun too lol

I think the reason why Ennis says"I probably wasn't much fun anyway" is that when you are having fun with someone and using the word fun(here I mean sex for fun, stay together for fun,being lovers for fun (the pleasure))youre not in the same way bound by obligations as when youre in a serious relationship. I think for Ennis it was fun, or maybe just way to spend time or  front to show the world around him he was a straight guy.Maybe even all of it.
I think Cassie was serious about her relationship with Ennis and she was really in love,so it was not just fun for her.They simply didnt look at their relationship in the same way.
In the goodbye scene with Jack I hear Ennis uses the word good time.

In the final confrontation, Ennis tries to appease Jack by bringing up Don Roe's cabin, (I may off on the spelling), and how they had a good time that year, and he'll try to get the cabin again.  Ennis wanted to be with Jack,  if only Jack understand that he had to change the date.

Ennis had no idea about, "what a girl wants, what a girl need."  When Cassie tells Ennis "that girl don't fall in love with fun" , she was telling him, there was something more about him than fun, and she wanted more from him,  she fell in love with him.   Ennis just didn't get it.

Yes.  And Cassie probably also felt insulted by what Ennis said -- that she was only into Ennis for the fun: without commitment, without any plans of building a life together.  Ennis didn't mean it, but Cassie must have felt cheapened.  She wanted to be with Ennis, and not just to have fun.
