Meeting Ennis with his daughters
« on: Feb 04, 2006, 09:03 AM »
I have a question about the scene when Jack comes to visit Ennis, and Ennis has his daughters in the truck.  Ennis says that he can't be with Jack that weekend because he missed last month's visit, and Jack looks to the road and there is a white truck barrelling towards Ennis' house.

What is the significance of this truck?  Jack seems visibly upset, like he knows something else that he's not letting on.  On the drive home, he's really torn up about it.

Anyone have any thoughts.

I think the two events--seeing the truck and Jack driving home in tears--both show us that Ennis is still reluctant to commit to the relationship.  Ennis looks at the truck because he's afraid someone will see them together, and then Jack is crying on the way home because he drove out to celebrate Ennis's divorce with him, thinking that now finally they could be together.  But Ennis isn't ready for that, so Jack is devastated.

I felt that the white truck in the distance was an excuse to say I am busy...
Whether or not, we are not sure.

Notice how Jack didn't want to let go of the "greeting hug", Ennis thought it was too long, took his arms off.
Its a sign of bad news ahead. You know when a guy comes up with lots of excuses, he keeps looking for words haltingly and points at anything lame...

Of course Jack was devasted. So is Ennis. He stood there downcast and miserable. He didn't have to do it, he could have brought the girls along with Jack, (what's wrong with that??), somehow his paranoia kicks in and pushes Jack away.  :'(
I'm saying a prayer of thanks... that you didn't bring your harmonica!
