Appreciation: Heath Ledger's untimely death, and that milestone performance
By Nathan Lee
Published: January 30, 2008

http://www.sfweekly.com/2008-01-30/film/appreciation

Excerpt:

What is there to say? His rigorous, wrenching turn in Brokeback Mountain, instantly accepted to the uppermost pantheon, now abides in the ethereal company of Mike Waters, narcoleptic angel of My Own Private Idaho. Like River Phoenix' lovesick hustler, Ledger's Ennis Del Mar is a milestone not only of acting but also of representation. His forthcoming role as the Joker will be what it is (and we can best respect his memory by letting it play out as free as possible from studio temerity and maniacal punditry), but Ledger's legacy will always rest on the sad shoulders of a performance that belongs equally to the history of acting and cultural consolation.

Fantastic festival line-up

NEXT week sees the start of Herefordshire's first lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans festival, which features a host of events, from live shows to films, to discussions and author appearances, all selected for their appeal to the entire community.

Organised to celebrate LGBT History month, the festival aims to inform and promote discussion and, above all, to entertain everyone.

"There is nothing in the programme that we would not have put on anyway," says Martyn Green, chief executive at The Courtyard. "They are bannered as Out in the Sticks presentations, but as many straight people as people from the LGBT community will come.

"The Courtyard has always been inclusive and Out in the Sticks sends a great message to the LGBT community in Herefordshire that there is support from the whole community.

The festival also offers a poignant opportunity to see the late Heath Ledger in the film for which he will probably be best remembered - Brokeback Mountain, Ang Lee's landmark movie, a powerful love story about two cowboys who fall in love.

Shrek And Donkey Voted 'Best Movie Couple'
Feb 21 2008 By Charlie Gall

FORGET Fred and Ginger... the movie couple with the best on-screen chemistry have been revealed as Shrek and Donkey.

Voiced by Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy in three hit movies, the animated twosome tied for top place with Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.

The survey of 1022 adults for the UK cinema industry found playing it for laughs was just as important as romance.

Dirty Dancing's Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey came third - but they tied with Homer and Marge in The Simpsons movie.

Other less conventional relationships making the top 10 were the late Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal as the gay cowboys in Brokeback Mountain and Maggie Gyllenhaal with James Spader in kinky flick Secretary.

Also on the list were Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in Mr and Mrs Smith, John Travolta And Olivia Newton-John in Grease, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet in Titanic and Harry Potter's Daniel Radcliffe and Katie Leung.

Grace Carley, of UK Cinema Industry, said: "It's an unusual choice... Shrek and Donkey are not even human."

But when I read the bolded part I was happy until the word "late" came up. It just makes it all too real for me  :-\\

I got this interesting bit from Twisted.  :)

Quote

Btw, I bought this finnish movie magazine, and there was this top 10 about tradig love story movies of all time and the top ten is:
10. Wuthering Heights
9. Leaving Las Vegas
8. Camille
7. William Shakespeare's Romeo&Juliet
6. Waterloo Bridge
5. English patient
4. Titanic
3. Love Story
2. Breaking the waves and number one, of course BBM.!!!!!

I'll try to translate the article here:

For the tradig love storys list, the top one is of course Brokeback Mountain. Ang Lee's directing is absolutely fantastic and not only a modern, but a timeless classic. The story tells how these two range men fell in love silently and that's why they are going to suffer. This movie is flawless in every way and got a true tradig ending, because of Heath Ledger's death. Finding a perfect life partner, but have to be a part from them for a long time is the most tradig thing, and Ang Lee's masterpiece tells this story in the most painfully.

P.S.  She is waiting for her connection to be restored.  Hope you get it soon, Twisted!  We miss you.  :)

Ten things you didn't know about Brokeback Mountain
Posted in: Movies
By Matt Akersten - 4th April 2008

http://www.gaynz.com/articles/publish/20/article_5777.php

---------------------------------------------------------------

The Oscar-winning story of cowboy love Brokeback Mountain gets an 'outing' on TV One this Sunday night. Here's a few facts about one of the most popular movie romances of all time.

1) The Brokeback Mountain of the title was named after the shape of the hill - has the same swayback curve as a brokeback horse or mule, which is swaybacked or sagging in the spine.

2) Reports from the set of the film say Heath Ledger almost broke Jake Gyllenhaal's nose during one of the passionate kissing scenes. Down, boy!

3) The film cost US$14 million to make, and grossed well over US$83 million in North America and over US$95 million abroad during its 133-day cinema run. This makes it the fifth-highest-grossing Western-themed movie, and eighth-highest-earning romantic drama.

4) Ledger has a nude scene in which he jumps into a lake. Director Ang Lee intended to edit any actual frontal nudity out of the film, but a sneaky paparazzo took photos of him with a digital camera. The photos appeared on the net and in some gossip magazines. The scene is included in the European version of the film, featuring Ledger and a stunt double for Gyllenhaal jumping into a lake from a rock.

Brickback Mountain: An intimate scene recreated in lego
5) Brokeback was banned from release in Chinese cinemas, with authorities there claiming that the audience would be too small to justify its release… yeah right! The movie later became freely available throughout China on copied DVD and video, and was very well received with reviews on Chinese radio, television, newspapers and magazines, despite the fact that homosexuality is still such a taboo subject there. Brokeback was also not officially shown in any Middle Eastern cinema except on a few screens in Lebanon.

6) While Brokeback isn't a CGI masterpiece like Lord of the Rings, it did require several visual effects to be added to original footage. The script called for about 2,500 sheep, but only 700 were on-set, so many more were added digitally. Also created by computer boffins were replacement skies, set additions, equipment erasures and even the hail in the hailstorm scene.

7) When Ledger was asked about any fear of being cast in Brokeback, he responded that he was not afraid of the role, but instead was concerned that he would not be 'mature enough as an actor' to do justice to the story. At first he was going to turn down the role of Ennis Del Mar, but his then girlfriend Naomi Watts encouraged him to take it.

8) After completion of the movie, Brokeback writer Annie Proulx sent both lead actors an original, autographed copy of her story. When she signed Jake's copy she wrote "To Jake...", but when she signed the copy for Heath, she accidentally wrote "To Ennis…" After continuing her personal message, she realized her mistake - but decided to leave it there. In a private screening later in Hollywood, she reflected that she left his signed copy that way because she felt Heath Ledger had embodied Ennis in every way she had wrote him.

9) A pair of shirts seen in the wardrobe the end of the film sold on eBay.com in February 2006 for US$101,100.51. The buyer was film historian and movie memorabilia collector Tom Gregory, who called the shirts "the ruby slippers of our time," and vowed he'd never separate them.

10) Heath Ledger would have turned 29 years old today, 4 April 2008. R.I.P.

I think they're wrong, or maybe I am. I've seen BBM on the TV and it's had them jumping off the cliff, though I don't think we have where you see the frontal view of Ennis jumping off, just from far away. Is there a difference there b/w Europeans version and mine?..Weird  ???

Ennis’s eyes gone bright with shock, mouth opening then closing again. “Love?” Ennis said finally, voice strangling in his throat.

Jack smiled sad. “Yeah, Ennis. Love.” Leaned forward and kissed Ennis’s temple, whispered, “What’d you think it was, all this time?”

Call up the posse: FBI seeks the "Brokeback Bandit"

I wish I knew how to quit … robbing banks. (FBI photo)

A message for would-be bank robbers:

If you rob a bank, not only will you have the FBI on your trail. You might also get a ridiculous picture of you in a cowboy hat circulated to thousands of people, and be dubbed the "Brokeback Bandit."

Tuesday morning, the Brokeback Bandit went to the City Center U.S. Bank branch in the 1400 block of Fifth Avenue. The man – believed to be 6-foot-2, in his 30s with an athletic build – approached a teller and demanded money.

No weapon was seen or implied, an FBI spokeswoman said. But he did have a signature cowboy hat.

The FBI did not say how much money was taken in the robbery.

Anyone with information is asked to call the FBI's Seattle office at 206-622-0460.

"Brokeback Mountain," was an award-winning 2005 film that detailed the romantic relationship between two cowboys. Starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, it was adapted by the short story of the same name by Annie Proulx.

"We don't know his sexual orientation," FBI spokeswoman Robbie Burroughs said. "The name was because of his cowboy hat."

The FBI acknowledges some people may complain about the nickname, but say the name is not ill-intentioned.

"The guy's got a cowboy hat. It's a popular movie," Burroughs said. "Let's not be too overly concerned about the bank robber's feelings."

Brokeback comics craze
Kai-Ming Cha

Sunday, August 10, 2008

Picture this: a cozy bedroom of a ski chalet in northern Japan, where two lithe men make passionate love to each other. Asuka's lean body is damp with moisture, his face is twisted in ecstasy. Saliva drips from his lover's parted lips as he breathes heavily.

Gay porn? Almost. Yaoi? Absolutely. Yaoi, the acronym for the Japanese phrase "Yama nashi, ochi nashi, imi nashi" ("no peak, no plot, no meaning") is a genre of comic from Japan that has slowly captured the minds of women all over the United States. Commonly referred to as yaoi or "boys love," these comics feature romantic relationships between two beautiful men and are created "for women by women," meaning they are written, illustrated and read by women.

"The genre's got a huge and diverse audience in here," says Jeff Ayers, store manager of Forbidden Planet, a comics store in New York. "It's attracted a ton of dedicated readers whose appetites I've found increasingly difficult to sate."

Those new to the genre are often confused by the concept of two men in a passionate relationship getting the attention of women. The best way to understand yaoi's appeal is to think of it as Brokeback comics - like the movie "Brokeback Mountain." While viewers may have found the first sex scene between the cowboys played by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal shocking, the emotional bond between the two draws the viewer into the story line and normalizes the sexual aspect of it. Similarly, yaoi comics focus as much on the relationship between two people as they do on the sex.

Just last year, yaoi was gaining a foothold in the American graphic novel market and growing. The erotic images and romantic stories were finding their way into retail chains like Borders, traditional comics shops and Amazon.com. But with Borders' financial troubles and publishers meeting reader demand for sexier boys in steamier situations, the yaoi market may go back online and back underground, where it began.

Unlike its popular big sister, manga (Japanese comics), yaoi has never actually been big. Last year, yaoi accounted for $6 million within the $210 million domestic manga market, as estimated by Kuo-Yu Liang, vice president of sales and marketing at Diamond Book Distributors. The company is the United States' biggest comics and graphic novels distributor and distributes yaoi to major book retailers like Borders and Waldenbooks as well as Books-a-Million, a chain of bookstores in Bible Belt America that has been a consistent supporter of yaoi.

Yaoi had a fan base in the United States as early as 2001, when the first yaoi fan convention, Yaoicon, took place in San Francisco. From there, the growing popularity of manga intersected with yaoi as publishers began exploring the various genres within manga, and experimented with bringing it to the United States. Knowledge of the genre also spread by word of mouth - in the form of online shouts and whispers - and manga publishers responded. Yaoi imprints sprung up to feed fans with story lines about angsty teen boys falling in love with schoolmates and hunky co-workers who secretly lusted after each other. Small, yaoi-only publishers also emerged, serving up the more erotic and pornographic fare that is increasingly in demand.

"Yaoi allows for a kind of enjoyment - visual stimulation without the self-examination," says Tina Anderson, a writer whose yaoi is published in the United States and Germany. "It allows you to distance yourself from the fantasy." What Anderson touches on is the way heterosexual sex in entertainment caters to the male point of view. A common complaint among high school manga and yaoi readers is that male-female sex shows the woman and little of the man. Yaoi, on the other hand, shows the man, and as one 15-year-old remarked, "It shows everything."

But the popularity of yaoi and the demand for pornographic man-on-man love has brought the industry to a crisis. Publishers polybag and label their books (some even put boilerplates inside their flaps, stating that all characters depicted within are 19 or older), but no amount of shrink-wrap can protect them from the content itself - or the resistance of the large chain bookstores to carrying it.

"Everything in print is available and orderable for our customers," says Jim Killen, graphic novels buyer at Barnes & Noble. B&N carries mature fare like Preacher and From Hell but doesn't stock everything its Web site does. But there is a certain line that the retail chain refuses to cross.

"While we do embrace a move toward content more mature in theme aimed at a more adult audience, we do not shelve those manga featuring gratuitous explicit/graphic sex and/or sexual violence."

It's the natural progression for business to expand, then contract, then expand some more - or just die out.

"Yaoi doesn't have to take over the world," Anderson says. "In Japan, (yaoi) is niche. Manga is big, but boys love is just an aspect of it. We don't need the whole world into yaoi."

Yaoi won't die, but the category has carved an interesting niche out for itself. The books are popular and sell well. Comics shops and even some branches of the Japanese bookstore Kinokuniya have devoted sections to yaoi. But the mainstreaming of yaoi has come to a halt. As Borders suffers, don't expect Barnes & Noble to pick up the slack, given its track record of shying away from explicit material.

"With the chains dropping the yaoi ball," Ayers says, "it's any savvy manga retailer's chance to shine." {sbox}

tpe,  :ghug: :^^) now I know why you won the trivia in the Seattle weekend. You are just full of information.

And it's priceless...Reading the last three items... :\'(...the love that never gets old.  :^^) Thanks.

Jack A. Weil, 107; designed, popularized cowboy shirts with snap fasteners

Jack A. Weil, a celebrated entrepreneur of the American West who added snaps and snappiness to cowboy shirts and then sold the garments to thousands who never saw the sagebrush, died Wednesday at his home in Denver. He was 107.

As founder and head of Rockmount Ranch Wear, Weil was regarded as a successful businessman and a symbol of longevity.

Considered the Henry Ford of the western shirt and a major force behind a notably American fashion, he was also said to be America's oldest chief executive.

A visionary and a classic innovator, Weil conceived the idea more than 60 years ago that "Westerners needed their own fashion identity," according to grandson Steve Weil.

Aiming to give western wear a look as distinctive as the region's topography and lifestyle, his grandson said, Weil created a slim-fitting shirt with a cut, cuffs, pocketing and fastenings that would make it immediately recognizable.

Other designers, of course, helped create the western look, but Weil was there at the beginning and was considered "the father of the snap western shirt."

One of his company's designs, saw-toothed pocket flaps and diamond-shaped snap fasteners, is "the longest-running shirt design in America," said his grandson, who is president of Rockmount.

Known as an inventive marketer and astute businessman, Weil joked that the family "would have starved if we only sold to cowboys," his grandson said.

"You have to appeal to the cowboy in everyone," Weil once told the Associated Press.

According to the company, Rockmount shirts have been worn by many entertainers, including the cast of the film "Brokeback Mountain."

"He lived a vibrant life for 107 years and five months," his grandson said, "and he never got tired, until the last few weeks."

.. and again i don't know where to put this... put it should be on the fic thread i think..

from afterelton today....

A few years back, Brokeback Mountain was all the rage, doing record-breaking box office for a gay-themed movie, winning countless awards (although, controversially, not that Best Picture Oscar), and finally showcasing the true talent of the late Heath Ledger, who had previously been squandering them on teen movies and horror genre fare.

The film also captured the minds of many who seem to have taken its ambiguous ending as a starting point for a great deal of fan-fiction. Brokeback slash fic can be seen all over the internet, and ranges from heartwarming (Jack returns to Ennis and they live happily ever after, awwwww) to sensual (extended and, um, detailed descriptions of their many trysts at that mountain).

However, after hearing the recent statements from author Annie Proulx on the fan-fiction she receives, it sounds as if she may want to take a tire iron to all those aspiring writers.  In a interview with the Washington Post's Bob Hughes to promote her newest short-story collection Fine the Way It Is (snap!), Proulx describes the Brokeback Mountain phenomenon as ”the source of constant irritation in my private life”, and then proceeds (as only a writer can do) to lay the verbal smackdown on the “ghastly manuscripts and pornish rewrites” she is sent by overzealous fans who dare attempt to extend the story.

While these two quotes are snarky enough, they don’t do the deliciousness of the full response justice, so I’ve included it here for you:

WSJ: What effect did the success of Brokeback Mountain have on your writing life, if any?

Proulx: Brokeback Mountain has had little effect on my writing life, but is the source of constant irritation in my private life. There are countless people out there who think the story is open range to explore their fantasies and to correct what they see as an unbearably disappointing story. They constantly send ghastly manuscripts and pornish rewrites of the story to me, expecting me to reply with praise and applause for "fixing" the story. They certainly don't get the message that if you can't fix it you've got to stand it. Most of these "fix-it" tales have the character Ennis finding a husky boyfriend and living happily ever after, or discovering the character Jack is not really dead after all, or having the two men's children meet and marry, etc., etc. Nearly all of these remedial writers are men, and most of them begin, "I'm not gay but…." They do not understand the original story, they know nothing of copyright infringement—i.e., that the characters Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar are my intellectual property—and, beneath every mangled rewrite is the unspoken assumption that because they are men they can write this story better than a woman can. They have not a clue that the original Brokeback Mountain was part of a collection of stories about Wyoming exploring mores and myths. The general impression I get is that they are bouncing off the film, not the story. There's more, but that is enough, ok?

There you have it, folks.  In laymen’s terms, stay away from the woman’s intellectual property.  Or, if you suddenly find yourself consumed with the burning desire to continue the story of Ennis and his ill-fated Jack, send it to one of the 3,526 Brokeback Mountain fan-fiction sites, start a writing group, read it to your boyfriend in bed, but for the love of God, don’t send it to her.  She might not like it.

Gay groups slam 'TV censorship'
Two key scenes chopped from Brokeback Mountain

(ANSA) - Rome, December 9 - Italian gay rights groups were up in arms on Tuesday after state broadcaster RAI censored several key scenes in a late-night showing of Ang Lee's 2005 Oscar-winning gay cowboy epic Brokeback Mountain.

Two scenes - one showing a kiss between the protagonists, played by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, and one alluding to the first sexual relations between the pair - were cut from the film when it went out on RAI's second channel, RAI Due, at 22.45 on Monday evening.

Arcigay president Aurelio Mancuso demanded an immediate public apology from the broadcaster and called for RAI's parliamentary watchdog to intervene in the matter.

''Public service television cannot in any way support the homophobia rampant in this country,'' he said.

Franco Grilini, president of Gaynet, said the cuts had made the film ''incomprehensible'' and called for RAI to show it again in its entirety.

''What was so touching about that film were the scenes of affection that RAI Due brutally cut, distorting the sense of the film and transforming a great homosexual love story into a simple friendship between men,'' Grillini said.

Grillini also pointed out that the film won the top Golden Lion prize at the Venice Film Festival in 2005, where it was given its world premiere.

''That state television, a public service, would censor a film that won a state festival is in itself absurd,'' he said.

The Mario Mieli Association added to calls for a public apology from the channel.

''RAI Due has shown its bigoted spirit, transforming a delicate film about love and passion between two men - which was not vulgar and was unfortunately very harsh in its epilogue - into a sanctimonious family film,'' the association said.

It also pointed out that neither of the scenes cut were explicit or contained even partial nudity.

Consumer rights association Aduc joined in the criticism, saying the cuts amounted to ''disgraceful, if no longer surprising, censorship which offends not only cinematographic art and people who believe in civil rights, but all license-fee payers''.

Scenes of explicit heterosexual sex and violence were not tampered with in Monday's showing.

Brokeback Mountain came out in Italian cinemas in January 2006 with an under-14 ban that was later revoked.

After winning the Golden Lion in Venice it went on to garner three Oscars, including best director, and four Golden Globes.
