The Pronunciation of Aguirre
« on: Feb 11, 2006, 09:45 AM »
I am confused as to the pronunciation of Aguirre.

How was it pronounced in the movie? I cannot clearly remember. Could someone who remembers post a phonetic example, please?

Here are several links which states that the name Aguirre is pronounced “A-GEAR-ay”:

Several times during a Tuesday hearing of the City Council, Turner incorrectly pronounced Aguirre's name "AH-gwire."
After letting it go numerous times, the city attorney interrupted: "In the interest of full disclosure, it's 'Ah-GEAR-y.'"

Raul Aguirre's last name was pronounced by Moyer as "Agwire".  It's tragic enough that Aguirre is a 17-year old who was murdered by gang members, but at least his name should be pronounced right.

Maybe because I'm French, but when I read the short story the first time (in English of course) I read Aguirre's name "Agwire"...mainly because of Jerry Macguire... ::)

Then I never paid attention to it anymore...if it is "Agearay"...well I don't really care...coz I'll keep calling him Agwire! I call his name in my head..no one else gets to hear it... ;D

Might be another reason to go see BBM again...just to check ;D

Not that I want to stop you from finding a reason to see it again :-)  But I saw it again this afternoon and its A-geary.

When I read the story I also read it as "Ag-wire".  I was surprised when I saw the movie the first time that it was pronounced "A-geary". It was one of those "huh?" moments for me.

Probably a name being "Americanized" over time.

In the movie, the first few times Aguirre's name is said it sounds like 'Geary' to me. It becomes more like 'A-Geary' later...Most clearly when Jack, trying to separate the Chilean sheep from the herd he was responsible for, says 'F*** A-Gearly!'. Maybe it's a little like French--the 'a' in Aguirre gets elided with the next spoken syllable?
