Walk to the bar.

One intersting thing that I've seen mentioned that foreshadows the crux of their relationship occurs on their walk to the bar.  It is so telling that Jack strides to the bar, while Ennis shambles along behind.  Jack is the leader, Ennis is the somewaht relutant follower.

I noticed that their paces are perfectly synchronized,
 I don't know if this is the right word,

Interesting thread, if we consider the glances they had for each other at the beginning.  Jack shaving and looking at Ennis from the mirror of his truck... Ennis glancing at Jake in the trailer  ::)

Can't wait to see what the other members will have to say.

Interesting remark. Now that you mention it, Jack does seem to be Ennis's leader, right up to the first tent scene...

It stands out stronger and stronger with each viewing. A stark and deliberate statement by Ang of the relationship at onset. Does anyone think it changes at some point?

Jack first introduced himself, found him four years later, and walking to bar.....I doubt if Ennis has ever been to one so Jack had to take the lead.

Ethan - I think so as well. Jack had to take the lead, Ennis wouldn't. He was a little backward that way. Jack still had to take the lead, even in the first tent scene. In fact anytime, it seems as if Jack is the leader.

Ang Lee is intelligent, it can't be just a coincidence. I have seen it twice and the second time, this scene was one that I really been thinking about afterwards. Their cowboy-posture-ish walk is also a bit fun to look at. And of course, Jack takes the lead...as always... in fact, the whole time towards the tent scene is like a long Jack-flirtation scene. I didn't see that the first time I saw it, but the second it was so clear. Ang Lee is so subtile... which makes me wanna go and see it again!

Kinda <OT>

Only one time I can recall when Ennis took the initiative is when he entered the tent - the most romantic 2nd tent scene. But then again, once he was in the tent, Jack took it over.  ;)

Also OT : Jack is definitely the one taking the lead. However, at the reunion 4 years later, it's Ennis who grabs Jack and hauls him to the back t plant that luscious kiss...! /OT

I agree that Jack takes the lead. However, I think Ennis has more "control" in the relationship. It's pretty much on his terms, them not living together, when they can meet etc. Jack can't see him as much as he would like because Ennis either can't or won't make more time. I think most of us agree that Jack would have redlined it to live with Ennis permantly if Ennis said he was ready. So while Jack was the leader and more outgoing he let Ennis have the reins.

ok, they went to the bar after the hiring scene with Joe Aguirre.  They were going to be trucked to the jump off the  NEXT morning.

Where did they spend the night?

In Jack's truck, Jack was sleeping.  Ennis was smoking one cig after another... where did I read this  ???

Good point, Luv. Ennis's decisions counted a lot, but Ennis almost let other people make those decisions for him, don't you think ? He remembered what his father had shown him when he was 9 years old.

Hi

I'm not sure if you could classify Ennis as passive-aggressive, as he often was just aggressive, i.e getting into physical/verbal confrontations.  Or do you mean passive-aggressive specfically in the context of his relationship with Jack? 

I too think the walk to the bar was very telling of the relationship and how it developed, with Jack taking the lead and Ennis following hesitantly behind.  It also felt to me as though Ennis was already unsure of Jack and his feelings for him and worried about walking next to Jack but I could be wrong!  It would've been nice to have some kind of intro into this scene, i.e the two of them deciding to go for a drink together - or is this one of the deleted scenes mentioned?

In his relationship with Jack I think Ennis exhibited some degree of passive agg. behavior.  Maybe because he was guarding his true feelings for Jack.  I think some of us do that when we are so smitten/in love with some one else in order to protect our feelings/ourselves.

And yes Ennis was capable of violence IN ORDER to protect those he was in love with. 

The tragedy of their relationship is that the thing Ennis MOST feared  might happen happened anyways.  I think Ennis could have protected Jack and himself when danger was around or died trying and take them (perpetraters) down with him.

We should also keep in mind that it was Jack's second year and he knew everything around quite well. SO he takes the lead not only because he is a leadre but also because he knows where the bar is.

I kind of thought the same thing.  Between his age and lack of money I thought Ennis had probably never been to a bar.  I did't notice, if Jack paid for the drinks.  Notice that Jack is the one who brings the alcohol to BB.  Think of Ennis in waiting outside of Acquirre's trailer with all his earthly possessions in a paper bag.  That's why I wonder later where the horses always come from.  In the story Ennis has horses and works weekends for their keep, if I remember right.  I don't understand how he ever afforded them.    In the movie the horses vary from scene to scene.  I also have to laugh that he transports the horses in the back of his truck.  I never saw that before.  Didn't know a truck could do that.   Sorry I got off the track.  I am a horse owner.                            - Nancy

This scene really drives home the extent of Ennis' emotion and passion.  He looks around quickly and can't control himself - right in the center of town!!!!!!   So out of character!!!!!!!   That is the extent of his love!!!     Later when Jack comes to see Ennis following his divorce,  they are out in the middle of nowhere and Ennis is still looking around to see who might spy them.                    -Nancy
