I read somewhere that someone did some research on this, and there was no such brand in the 1960's...  So it was probably just made up for the movie...

The only links that have something to do with BetterMost beans when doing a Google search are links to BBM sites. I wondered if they existed myself, but apparently not.

mankiss7, welcome here. ;D Maybe you could introduce yourself and tell us more about you here: http://www.ennisjack.com/index.php?topic=1478.0

I read that BetterMost Beans were a non-trademarked label only.

Oh I love it.  Beans Better Most = BrokeBack Mountain.  And those beans were so crucial to the film too!

Other themes running throughout film

shirts
harmonica
whiskey
fishing

Anyone think of any more?

Sorry, I'm off topic I know but I'm just loving this thread, I really am!

Thank God, because it sure is hard to put those suckers in my grocery cart when I hit the store!

They usually won't put 'brand' name items in movies, but in this case, the BBM works just fine.

au contrair Cowboy, most movies now a days are loaded with product placement.  Compaines pay millions to have their porduct used AND seen in a movie most notably high budget fims ala King Kong.  check it out and count the number of branc name products in the next Bruce Willis film.

The reason they used their own created brand was because of a potential suit from a company that would NOT want to have their product in a (at that time) gay cowboy film.

Sounds like some of the Prop manager's humor.  Like the "Old Rose Whiskey" that they drink and has been commented sounds like a play on the line "stem the rose".

There used to be (and maybe still is) a REAL brand of whiskey called Four Roses.

I really figured the brand was a sort of joke, because it really didn't take long for Jack to say "No more Beans." Clearly, they weren't BetterMost. They looked pretty nasty too.

dissident, yes they do not look tasty at all.

After reading your post, it makes me wonder - why did they have to eat beans? No other options to pack for them? Perhaps someone can enlighten me on this.

Or is it another metaphor of this movie?

I took it that the food supplies as being controlled by Aguirre--to keep down costs.

If it's a metaphor, I haven't figured it out yet.

There was no refrigeration in camp, so that reduced the number of food items.  Basically it had to either be in a can or a box.  Beans are a cheap source of protein and these guys were working hard and needed a lot of protein every day.  The only other alternative was to shoot some game which they did.  I agree with Cherry Cake that Aguirre probably wanted to keep the costs down so there were likely few items available.  It was just a summer job.
