Ennis/Jack skipped breakfast after FNIT?
« on: May 09, 2006, 11:02 AM »
It just occurred to me that Ennis left the tent in the morning after the FNIT without having breakfast.  I think the boys usually have breakfast before going to work for the day.  I would think they would get pretty hypoglycemic if they didn't have something to eat before a long day's work...  Any thoughts on this?

Yes.  That was why I thought Jack went out and said 'See you for supper...'  He knew that their routine was a bit off at that point...

Furthermore, the night before, Ennis was so drunk he could hardly stand on his feet. Mornings after such a boozy night, one might not really feel like breakfast... Then again, Ennis had just had his first "opportunity" to be a sinner...   ;D  ;D  ;D

Yeah, I think Ennis probably had other things on his mind.... ;)

Yes, in such a state, he might have expectorated anything he ingested anyway...

I'd venture to say that after their night of drinking, both had whopping hangovers.  Ennis looked a bit nauseous to me.  So, they might have had upset stomachs.  Plus, I think they were in states of semi-shock.   When Ennis woke up, he seemed to be thinking  WTF?  did that really happen?  I'm sure both of their stomachs were in knots wondering what to do next.  I think Jack would have been happy to fix Ennis some breakfeast if Ennis hadn't have taken off.  But Jack probably knew Ennis needed some space and time to think.  But, I'm sure they made up for it after SNIT.  Bet they built up some big appetites after that night!   :o

Plus, on a slightly more serious note, perhaps Ennis just wasn't ready for the domestic implications that a postcoital breakfast might have. . . .  It was not until after SNIT that they could incorporate being "friends with benefits" into their daily routine.  Imagine what dinner must have been like just before SNIT!

Good points, stacp;  morning-after nerves + hangover, who could eat??  Don't think there was anything "semi" about the shock either, for Ennis.  Now, morning after SNIT, bring on the elk and beans ... :)  ... glad it was Ennis that went looking for Jack finally ... must have got his appetite back..  ;)

Hmmm... I'm not even sure that dinner before SNIT would be all that spectacular.  I think it would've been awkward for both guys to express their feelings that evening about what happened, and I suspect Jack had decided to turn in that night not knowing whether Ennis would come into the tent with him or bunk outside again or even back to the pup tent with the sheep.

"Friends with benefits" - ha ha, I love that :D

I'm guessing dinner before SNIT would have been pretty quiet. I don't think they could have gone back to their chatty, joking, easy friendship of the nights before FNIT - things would have been too tense, with neither of them ready to reveal their feelings. I reckon Jack probably wanted to talk about things further, but he would have known that it had to be Ennis who made the next move.

Sorry, that's probably OT...

As to dinner before the second night, I sense a different hunger here.

With such a hunger, how can one eat?  Then again, food is the best aphrodisiac.

"Friends with benefits" : I love that expression too.   :)

Tpe, if it had been me, on that particular occasion, food would not have been aphrodisiac. I would have had absolutely no appetite. I could not have cared at all about eating, having realised that I was within reach of all my heart could ever ever desire.   :-\

Bringing the conversation back down to earth a bit, I'm sure Ennis (or whoever was tending the sheep at the moment) was in the habit of bringing something to eat with him up to the mountain. Seems like in the story there's a mention of Ennis bringing some... bread of some sort (?) up on the mountain at one point.

Also, OOT, but what did the dogs eat? Did Ennis bring them some food every day? Did they have to scrounge around for squirrels and voles?

Sorry for above confusion--I actually meant that probably the dinner before SNIT was silent and awkward (slightly OT, but if you read any of Jack Nasty's fan fiction, she has written a great dramatization of these scenes--in the fan fiction section).  But after SNIT, tension was released and they could return to their rich and rewarding friendship/love.  :)

About the dogs: I'm betting they were supposed to scavenge for their dinners, but surely Jack and Ennis would share some elk and the like with them?  I can't imagine the dogs surviving the summer on beans!  ;)

Perhaps I see your point stephan

When one has plain sex, one can eat -- it being just a part of the sensual element.

But when one is in love, one can neither eat nor sleep.

Perhaps this is not quite what you have in mind.  Perhaps it is more about being emotionally involved instead of just finding physical gratification...

Maybe they didn't have breakfast because they were a little awkward around each other after experiencing a night of unexpected passion..and maybe they didn't know what to say to each other so they just went there seperate ways for the day..or as others have mentioned after a night of drinking maybe Ennis coudln't stomach the thought of eating anything..they were certaintly hungery for each other hehe during the night  ;)

It is likely that the herder would have brought some slight provisions to tide him over.

As for the dogs: good question...  Sheep herders should know the answer to this plainly...

I think Ennis just wanted to get out of there and do some thinking. :s)

am late too..watched the film this year..anyways better late than never :)

I also think Ennis just wanted to be by himself,,he was in shock as to what happened in FNIT..he realized that he was vulnerable and if he would have spend time with Jack over breakfast then he wouldnt know what to say and how to react..the time he spend alone the whole day made him think more straight and accept the feelings slightly better...

I doubt that both would have been able to eat.  One wonders whether Ennis would have gone down for supper -- had not Jack gone up to where he was -- or at least this seems to be what happened...

I agree.Ennis felt too confused as to spend time with Jack after what had happenned. It's the same situation we talk about in another thread about supper's time; what to do,what to say,how behave himself, what are his feelings?...Too many questions to be answered even that night,so less still the morning after...

I repeat the same I've just said;and I'd add that I agree in that surely Ennis has spent all day long up in the mountain. He surely didn't want to be face to face with Jack, his desire object, but also his confusion object.
Ennis’s eyes gone bright with shock, mouth opening then closing again. “Love?” Ennis said finally, voice strangling in his throat.

Jack smiled sad. “Yeah, Ennis. Love.” Leaned forward and kissed Ennis’s temple, whispered, “What’d you think it was, all this time?”

ya so true....Jack was his desire object was well as his confusion object..well said...Ennis would be thinking that he gave in to Jack last night... he had to confront his emotions but he was too scared in the morning  as he had to face it..but it was tooo fresh in his mind in the morning and he was too overwhelmed...he needed some time alone....breakfast was out of the question....Jack knew about it....in the evening too jack dint goto him..he realized that Ennis is taking it hard and needs time...he was alone in the tent thinking of Ennis and giving him his space.....he was soo overjoyed when Ennis himself came in the tent...that was so beautiful and touching :)
