Mark Wahlberg "Creeped Out" By Brokeback Mountain Role
Written by Chris Evans
Published February 28, 2007

Apparently Mark Wahlberg was happy filmmaker Ang Lee passed him over for one of the roles in Academy Award winning film Brokeback Mountain because the idea of playing a gay cowboy "creeped him out."

At some point during the development of the film, he and Joaquin Phoenix were considered for the roles of Jack and Ennis, but Wahlberg felt uncomfortable about gay sex acts in a tent.

Wahlberg says, "I met with Ang Lee on that movie, I read 15 pages of the script and got a little creeped out. It was very graphic, descriptive - the spitting on the hand, getting ready to do the thing. I told Ang Lee, ‘I like you, you’re a talented guy, if you want to talk about it more…’ Thankfully, he didn’t.”

Obviously the parts eventually went to Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal who both received Oscar nominations for the film, and the movie was almost unanimously critically claimed, but Wahlberg says he had no real desire to see the film.

He adds, “I didn’t rush to see Brokeback, it’s just not my deal… Obviously, it was done in taste - look how it was received.”

Now here’s my thing. I can understand a straight man being uncomfortable with the gay sex scenes in the film, but to use the words “creeped out” is almost disgusting. What’s creepy about it? It’s just a sex scene like in any other movie. It’s simulated. It’s not like anyone’s actually asking you to put your penis in anyone’s ass. And considering the fact that he's done some pretty explicit scenes in his day, it’s disappointing to me that he’d have that attitude about the film.

I'm the first person to shoot down gay men who are angry because some straight guy doesn't enjoy watching two men get it on, because why would they? They're straight. And like I said, it makes sense that it would make him uncomfortable or uneasy. But in your last film you shot a man dead. It's easier for you to play that than to play a man who's in love with another man?

Then he has the nerve to say that obviously the movie was well received because the homosexuality was done in taste. Excuse me? So because this is a story about two gay men, the sex needs to be tasteful and classy, yet there’s no problem with the millions of raunchy and explicit heterosexual sex scenes that are out there in movies that have been great films.

I would think Mark would be even more sensitive considering his uncle who he has discussed before. He said,

My uncle was gay and he was a teamster and a truck driver and he was a guy's guy, but he kept this secret his whole life. Imagine how hard that must have been for him. I feel so bad. Every time my dad brings it up, he cries because he loves his brother more than anything. He doesn't care what it was. He was born that way. Acceptance is the key. The only way you're gonna succeed in life and really grow as a human being is through acceptance.

I love Mark, as an actor — and he’s a gorgeous man. But these statements seriously disappoint me. I thought he had outgrown this crap years ago. It's called acting, Mark.  It's all pretend.

John Travolta loves Brokeback Mountain

John Travolta has a crush on a young celebrity and loves Brokeback Mountain.
by Editor-in-Chief on 2007-03-02

John Travolta has a crush on Scarlet Johansson.
The 53-year-old actor thinks Scarlett, 22, is the most beautiful and talented actress of her generation.
He told MTV: "I adore Scarlett. She has an old-time essence about her. She is a classic type. She'll be around forever."
As well as Scarlett, Travolta is impressed by many of the current crop of young Hollywood stars.
He said: "There are a lot of young stars that I really like. The two guys from 'Brokeback Mountain', Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger, I thought were great. And they're part of the new generation coming through.
Earlier this week, Travolta claimed Scientology could have saved Anna Nicole Smith.
The actor believes the late Playboy Playmate may still be alive if she had checked into the controversial Scientology drug and detox programme Narconon.
John, who worked with Anna Nicole on 'Be Cool', said: "It's so sad. We could have helped her with Narconon but didn't get the chance to. I wish we had."
Narconon has been widely criticised for its unorthodox methods which are inspired by the teachings of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.
The treatment includes taking large doses of vitamins, an intensive running programme, and long sauna sessions which "run out" drugs and "radiation"
from the body.

I found this post by kathy from the Feb. thread interesting.  I shall post it here again for easy reference:

I'm not sure where this would go, a link to a new book about BBM.

U.S. lists 'Borat,' 'Brokeback Mountain' among human rights victims in 2006
By Matthew Lee

Posted: 6:48 AM- WASHINGTON - Fictional gay cowboys and a faux reporter from Kazakhstan suffered human rights abuses in 2006 as crackdowns on flesh and blood victims were extended to the Internet, award-winning films and noted plays worldwide, the State Department says.
From the movies "Borat" to "Brokeback Mountain," foreign governments banned or restricted access to a variety of big and little screen entertainment as well as live events, the State Department says.
British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen - creator of Borat, the crass Kazakh chronicler of the American condition - and the gay cowboy love story that won three Oscars were hit with what it deemed violations of freedoms of speech and expression...

Mark Wahlberg "Creeped Out" By Brokeback Mountain Role
Written by Chris Evans
Published February 28, 2007

Boy do I ever appreciate Heath and Jake, Thomas, as you said.  Wahlberg creeps me out.  And anyway, looking at him and Joaquin -- nothing against their looks, but Heath and Jake were so unequivocably (unequivocally?) Ennis and Jack.  Maybe we just say that since they were who indeed played Ennis and Jack...but as we've said in another thread, even trying to envision another pair of men playing Ennis and Jack -- there were none better than Heath and Jake.  And not just their looks, obviously, but the people that Heath and Jake are, that they brought to their roles.  They knew this would be important to a lot of people, it seems, and they found within themselves Ennis and Jack loving each other.

And we don't even have to further comment on all the crap about gay sex needing to be tasteful, things like that, but raunchy, even sadistic, heterosexual sex is okay, and killing people in the most gory way possible is totally okay.  Hmpf.

I ordered this book when I got that email.  I do look forward to reading it -- a forum like us, but different.   :)  I appreciate the DC forum because they are active in getting things done.

Anyway, I didn't know where to post notice of this book, and assumed others on ennisjack also had gotten DC's email.

I don't think Wahlberg  is the type who could have done what Heath and Jake did in BBM.  I guess that's why Heath and Jake got the well-deserved recognition.

As for JP, perhaps he could have been up for it.  I don't know whether he is haunted by his brother.  I think he did say in an interview that he IS haunted by his brother's memory.

I agree with everything you said about mark, TPE.  I saw a very short interview on TV a few weeks ago where Mark & some other person were discussing brokeback mountain.  I forgot what it was about cause i was babysitting & the kids were loud.. but perhaps this is it?

great to hear John Travolta liked BBM! :) I'm glad he did liked it.  it's always great to hear what a celebrity thinks of a certain movie, isn't it?  8)

about that new book : "Reading Brokeback Mountain Essays on the Story and the Film", I might just have to get it! I think all BBM collector's should get this one.  Especially the new book "Beyond Brokeback Mountain"WOW! A messageboard dedicated to BBM.. who loved the film so much.. is producing and writing a BOOK?!? WOW.  how fascinating is that?.  Now thats what you call some hardcore true BBM fans! I hope they include all the important ways BBM has effected people.  Things like

- bringing people together from ALL over the world through online messageboards/forums so close to each other that they form lifelong friendships.  And because of the impact of the movie people are actually hosting meetings, taking trips to the Actual filming locations, camping out, renting out theatres to show BBM again, etc
- inspiring people to want to name a mountain "brokeback mountain" as a tribute.  (talking about the vermont mountain, did that ever go through?)
- inspiring people to wear what jack & ennis are wearing a bit more often, sometimes.  Even taking pictures of the all-so-famous pose where ennis is standing up, and jack is laying down.. sideways.

- motivating people to write a "what if" or "after" story, to the movie
- teaching the world to be more openminded & free
- inspiring all muscians to learn the BBM music pieces.. such as the Theme 1, 2, 3, wings, a love that will never grow old ,etc,
- touching viewers of BBM so much, that people are actually writing out to the director (ang lee), the cast, etc.  Not only about the movie, but also to wish them a happy birthday!
- and the list goes on

i Really do hope the Davecullen people put all the ideas above into the book.  The reason? Because there are so much people out that love the movie so much, that have been touched so deeply.. that they plan to visit the actual filming locations.  Problem is, a lot of people still don't know that those mountains in the movie are in Canada.  Some think it's in Wyoming (although people are still taking trips there cause the book is based there.. isnt there a REAL brokenback mountain in wyoming though?).. heck, some have no idea! but are really curious.   I guess, we want all BBM fans to be educated and to know what people out there are actually doing.. and that people are actually taking trips (a lot still don't know), you know what I mean people?  Heh, i should sign up for the forum and post my suggestions there huh?  ;)

You know can I say, while yes Travolta is insane he is this loving man none the less.  And oddly smart.  I love him having the guts and smarts to say that about the boys.   I mean I can't condone the scientology but then again...as John Lennon said "what ever gets you through the night" I dunno.  Who knows, I don't have anything against them doing it I guess my issue is when they say any other way is WRONG like Cruise did.  Saying depession and psychiatry is wrong.  what's the saying " a fool thinks he knows it all, a wise man knows he knows nothing"  or something...

Thanks Insomniac487, for sharing your thoughts!

I suspect the greatest tribute to BBM is in the way it has quietly changed lives.  The book would be a manifestation of this quiet change, and it will not fail to resonate.

Whether people make the journey physically or emotionally, I am sure that ineviatably, BBM will find its way into their hearts.

I feel the same way Toadily.  At least Travolta distinguished between the actors and the subject matter.  Even if he probably does not agree with the subject (given his scientology background), he certainly sounds more lucid and reasonable than TC.
