How ironic that the same director and winner and the Oscar movie of this year is Slumdog Millionaire, that wasn't the case when Ang Lee was best director and Brokeback Mountain was shamed away for Crash.
how time have still pester the academy to be as hypocritical as ever.
my two cent worth
However very very happy to have Shawn Penn win for the role of Harvey Milk

Well done, Heath indeed.

Thank you, Randchand for being with us tonight. It will be one of unforgettable evening.

‘Slumdog Millionaire’ Wins Eight Oscars, Including Best Picture
By MICHAEL CIEPLY and DAVID CARR

LOS ANGELES — “Slumdog Milllionare” swept the Academy Awards with eight prizes, including for best picture, capping an unlikely trajectory for a movie about a young man’s rise from the slums of Mumbai to television stardom.

Heath Ledger posthumously won the Oscar for best supporting actor for his role in “The Dark Night,” while Kate Winslet and Sean Penn took home best actress and best actor awards for their respective performances in “The Reader” and “Milk.”

And Penélope Cruz won for best supporting actress for her portrayal of the fiery ex-wife of an amorous artist in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”

“Has anybody ever fainted here?” Ms. Cruz said in accepting the award. She then dedicated the award to her parents, and told how as a child she watched the Oscars, calling her art “the world’s universal language.” And then in Spanish, she thanked the people of Spain, saying she shared the award with her homeland.

For Ms. Winslet, the award was her first Oscar. But the emotional highlight of the night was the award to Ledger, who died in his Manhattan apartment Jan. 22, 2008, from what was ruled an accidental drug overdose.

"I have to say this is ever so humbling, just being amongst such wonderful people in such a wonderful industry," said his father, Kim Ledger, who accepted the award on behalf of the actor’s three-year-old daughter, Matilda. "We’d like to thank the Academy for recognizing our son’s amazing work, Warner Bros., and Christopher Nolan in particular for allowing Heath the creative license to develop and explore this crazy Joker character.""Slumdog Millionaire," considered the favorite for best picture, won at least six other awards, including best director, best adapted screenplay, best original score and cinematography.

Overall, Sunday evening’s Oscar show was something of a struggle between the ambitions of a producing team — headed by the veteran film producer Laurence Mark and the filmmaker Bill Condon — that aimed for an evening full of surprises and the apparent determination of 5,810 voters in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to bestow honors largely where they were expected to go.

A much-discussed new format for the show found Hugh Jackman, the evening’s host, performing a comical tribute in song to the five best picture nominees as the event began at 5:30 p.m. in the Kodak Theater here. He then wandered into the audience to tease the nominees, telling Mickey Rourke that “If you win, we do a 20-minute delay.”

In a departure from past practice, the evening’s celebrity presenters were not identified in advance, partly in the hope that a larger-than-usual audience would tune in to see who actually showed up.

Tilda Swinton, for instance, handed out the award for best supporting actress, with Goldie Hawn, Sarah Jessica Parker and Whoopi Goldberg also making appearances. Ben Stiller appeared onstage brooding and donning a fake beard, a comical allusion to Joaquin Pheonix’s awkward appearance recently on “The Late Show With David Letterman.”

The Academy also paid homage to “Milk” in giving its best original screenplay award to Dustin Lance. And “Wall-E” was named best animated feature. “Departures,” from Japan, was the surprise winner in the best foreign language film category.

white_angel - thank you for the list.

As much as I was hoping Anne to pull the win - I know there will be more from her to come.

Notable quotes from the 81st annual Academy Awards
Notable quotes from Sunday night's 81st annual Academy Awards in Los Angeles
The Associated Press
AP

Quotes from Sunday night's 81st annual Academy Awards at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles:

"You commie homo-loving sons of guns. I did not expect this, and I want it to be very clear that I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me, often, but I am touched by the appreciation." — Sean Penn, accepting the best actor Oscar for his role in "Milk."

"I'd be lying if I said I haven't made a version of this speech before. I think I was probably 8 years old and staring into the bathroom mirror, and this would have been a shampoo bottle. Well, it's not a shampoo bottle now." — Kate Winslet, holding the Oscar she won as best actress in "The Reader."

"My kids are too old to remember this now, but when they were much younger, I swore to them that if this miracle ever happened that I would recede into the character of Tigger from Winnie the Pooh." — Danny Boyle, jumping up and down, after winning the best director Academy Award for "Slumdog Millionaire."

"This award tonight would have humbly validated Heath's quiet determination to be truly accepted by you all here — his peers within an industry he so loved." — Heath Ledger's father, Kim Ledger, accepting the award for best supporting actor on behalf of his son.

"When I was 13 years old my beautiful mother and my father moved me from a conservative Mormon home in San Antonio, Texas, to California, and I heard the story of Harvey Milk and it gave me hope. It gave me the hope to live my life." — Dustin Black, accepting best original screenplay Oscar.

"It's not going to be 45 seconds, I can say that right now. Has anybody ever fainted here? Because I might be the first one." — Penelope Cruz, accepting the best supporting actress award.

"Fifteen career Oscar nominations. That's a record. I hate to say it but when someone puts up numbers like that, it's just hard not to think steroids." — Host Hugh Jackman to Meryl Streep during the opening of the show.

"There are certain places in the universe you never imagine standing. For me, it's the moon, the South Pole, the Miss World podium and here." — Simon Beaufoy on-stage after winning best adapted screenplay for "Slumdog Millionaire."

"Now listen, I want you to relax tonight. I want you to say whatever is on your mind because you know we have a seven-second delay, but if you win, we switch to a 20-minute delay." — Host Hugh Jackman to Mickey Rourke during the opening of the show.

"This award touches my heart and the very depth of my soul because of who the award is from and those who will benefit. The humility I feel is staggering, and I know it will stay with me for the rest of my life." — Jerry Lewis, while accepting an Oscar for humanitarian work.

Good morning, hpv!  So you didn't stay up until 5:00 AM or whatever to watch? :)

I'm about to go to bed.  It was one intense evening...

I'm disappointed, though, that we didn't see Jake!  Reese was a presenter, though.

Well, have fun looking over the various results.  Goodnight.

It amazes me that a movie without any nomination in the acting categories can pull a win for best picture.

Well, yeah, but Slumdog Millionaire had three different actors playing each of the main character so it would have been harsh to give best actor accolades to any of them. The only one who could have got it would have been Dev Patel, but the younger kids were as big stars as he was...
He will be eternally missed, but he will never be forgotten

Christopher Nolan, accepting the Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe on Heath's behalf.

He was, as an actor and a professional and a human being, one of a kind

Charles Roven, accepting Heath's BAFTA.

This award tonight would have humbly validated Heath's quiet determination to be truly accepted by you all here — his peers within an industry he so loved.

Kim Ledger, accepting Heath's Oscar.

Ooooh Heath baby, yes!!!!
The most difficult scene was the paragraph where, on the mountain, Ennis holds Jack and rocks back and forth, humming, the moment mixed with childhood loss and his refusal to admit he was holding a man.

- Annie Proulx -

From the vibration of the floorboard on which they both stood, Ennis could feel how hard Jack was shaking.
