Ennis humming
« on: Mar 09, 2006, 11:54 PM »
I don't know if this was talked about before or not, so if it was, I apologize.

Ennis was humming something just before he encountered the bear. It sounded familiar, but it wasn't until today that I recognized it. Its from a song sometimes known as "The Streets of Laredo" (which interestingly enough is also a title of a Larry McMurtry book).

When I Googled "The Streets of Laredo" it turns out that the song is also known as "The Cowboy's Lament". If I recall correctly, this song was listed in the movie credits, but after the first couple of times, I usually don't sit through the entire end credits so my memory may be faulty

This is a link to the song story and lyrics:

"No More Beans"

"Beans 'bout all we got left"

"We got to do somethin' 'bout this food situation. Maybe I'll shoot one of the sheep"

"We're supposed to guard the sheep, not eat 'em"

You got it, Ennis must have been happy! Very sweet moment.
We can't change it. We will have to stand it.

chrissy323, I congratulate you on such an excellent post!!!  I have always wondered about the 'humming' as he was leading the mules back to camp.  You have completely clarified this for me.  What subtlety!!!

The only other time when something similar happens is in the scene when they show Jack waking up inside the tent because of Ennis's discomfort from the cold outside.  Here we hear the final tremolo strings that end the introductory part of the music score -- ever so softly.  It adds to the mood of anticipation of what is about to happen next.

Thank you!

AhHA!  So I'm not the only one who wonders about the sounds you hear in that scene!  I wondered if perhaps there was a cut scene where that music was played, and though the scene was cut the music carried over.

Sorry if this has been posted before, but I didn't see it.  All of you with supersonic hearing, listen during the scene where Ennis is leading the pack mules back to camp, just before he meets up with the bear.  Do you hear him humming "Streets of Laredo"?  I don't hear really well, but I'm sure it's there, in the theater version as well as on DVD.  Can someone confirm for me?

Haven't been posting for a few weeks--sadly, real life intrudes at times.   ;)  Glad to see that you all are still here and busy as ever!

An earlier thread was started that answered this question most beautifully.

He was not humming.  The sound you hear is actually a rendition of the traditional Cowboy's Lament, the first 'song' you see given in the credits.

Yes I heard him humming something but I'm not fluent enough yet with country music to confirm the song tough I worked very hard on country music lately.

BTW camom, congratulations for your 200rd post, you are now a Alma  ;D

Hey, thanks, can't post as much as some here, but I do what I can.  BTW, I accidentally posted twice, could you move your reply to the other thread?  Thanks much!

Thanks, tpe, I'll look for the thread.  I don't think I'm familiar with "Cowboy's Lament."  I'll have to look that one up, too.

Just looked it up--"Cowboy's Lament" is also known as "Streets of Laredo."  So I did hear it right...thanks!

camom, Pierre and the others are right: he was most probably humming this tune.

The thread is under Soundtrack & Others: Cowboy's Lament/Streets Of Laredo  :)
