Who is more faithful?!... Jack or Ennis?!...
« on: Mar 12, 2006, 11:12 PM »
I think, Jake G is right bout Ennis... Ennis' love for Jack is stronger than vice versa!...

"In some ways I think maybe Ennis' love is stronger because there is a faithfulness to that and I think you see it happen," he admits. "I think Jack eventually says ‘I'm going to have to go on with my life, I'm going to have to find somebody else and find intimacy with him.’ He does, at the end his Dad says he brought some other guy here and they were going to want to work on a farm."

'bout u guyz?!... who do u think is more faithful?!... Jack or Ennis?!...C=

This is difficult to say because I do not wish to hurt anyone's feelings, but ...

I was wondering why it is we have all of a sudden started trying to tear down one of the boys.  Or to put one over the other.  Who suffered more...who was more faithful...who loved more....

Have we run out of things to talk about?  If so, may I suggest everyone go to

http://www.ennisjack.com/index.php?topic=1766.msg41100#msg41100

and belittle me and/or my theory and leave the two people we all love alone.  Jack and Ennis have become real people to some of us.  They are part of our family.  We smile with them and we cry for them.

I don't mean to come crashing down on the original poster of this message or to hurt anyone's feelings, it is all the messages like this one that have started to show up.  Please leave our brothers alone.  They have suffered enough.

Thank you so much,
Patriot1

I have cited this excerpt before because it is Gyllenhaal's opinion on the subject.  It is part of a longer interview posted in the Gyllenhaal Profile thread.

As I had said previously, I don't think Jack brought the Texas neighbor to his parents house.  But I believe there is more than a grain of truth and undeniable depth in Gyllenhaal's understanding of the Ennis character.

I love the way how they show ther feeLings w/ each  other and etc... its just that, when I saw the post where Jake G said that it was reaLLy Ennis whose Love was stronger than Jack, i started wondering whether either of them has a faULt why they ended up Like that... I just cant understand!... but thank u Patriot for reminding me bOut ur post and theory regarding this one!... Now, i understand coz in the movie, u shud anaLyze each scenes that are shown and I coudn't coz actuaLy ive onLy watched the movie not on a theatre (big screen) but onLy in my computer and it was so bLurred and choppy so i have to ask these kind of questions to satisfy those questions in my mind... If I could just have a DVD and watch it on my widescreen TV, i would probabLy understand the story more!hehehe!... So, im so sori if others would think that im trying to tear down one of the boys coz that was not reaLLy my intention... esp to Patriot, Sorry!C= Thankz again for ur post... It reaLLy make sense!C=

I agree.  I love them both and like the rest of us they both have their faults:  Ennis that emotionally he didn't have more to give and Jack that he could not be satisfied with what little Ennis had to give.  That's just how I see it.                        - Nancy

Jack was a bitch definitely, but a bitch with big heart & soul  :-\
He had a much higher sex drive than Ennis, but from an emotional point of you he stayed fixed to Ennis; remember the expression of his face when looking for a mexican hustler; there is more in his face than lust and hunger, there is also sadness & defiance; I guess

Patriot1, that is an incredible interpretation  and I agree completly with you. Now you got me crying and I'm almost out of the cheap toilet paper I use for tissues! Damn you!  :-*
There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can't fix it you've got to stand it.

Ennis, riding against the wind back to the sheep in the treacherous, drunken darken light, thought he'd never had such a good time, felt he could paw the white out of the moon.

Yes, and self-loathing, also.

I never really got the impression that one love was stronger than the other. They're just so different from each other - Jack was ready to embrace their love while Ennis had a constant inner fight with his emotions over it.

Ennis probably Had inner turmoil, however  you could truly see in in his expression and sudden looks and intimate moments that he was truly an intense character and for me personally he will always be the person I relate most to, his undying love is , as I put it " wordless" put filled with passion unmatched to anything I ever experience

Neither one.  They were just plain different in how they approached life...Jack wanted to live and grab all he could get...Ennis accepted societal limitations and rules much more easily.  They both gave their all to this relationship over twenty years....it ebbed and flowed...sometimes one gave more than the other...and then it changed...just like life does for everyone.  Trying to fit them into a neat package of who loved more or was more faithful completely misses the point of Annie's story.  These guys were Yin and Yang!

Its hard to say because they both lived seperate lives...Ennis in the sense didn't go out and sleep with other men as Jack did..I think Jack was faithful in the sense that he loved Ennis, wanted to live with him on a more premament basis instead of just meeting every so often for a limited amount of time. I think they both in theory wanted to be true to each other and be with each other. Its a love story and I do agree trying to box them into categories does what the movie didn' t want us to do. But it easy to generalize and to put people into categoires because we all used to it and it helps us to understand whats going on and relate to what happend in the movie.

I think it's a bit hard and unfair to make a direct comparison.  Whilst Ennis didn't stray with another man, I'm sure Jack didn't want to.  Given the choice, he'd have had Ennis and no other IMHO.  But Ennis rejected him so many times, that he obviously felt like he had to pursue his own life and seek other potential suitors.  I honestly don't blame Jack for straying.
It's not as if he was playing around within a committed "live in" relationship.  Jack so wanted that with Ennis but it was denied it every time he asked.  That sexy dark haired rodeo cowboy from Lightning Flat wouldn't have so much looked at another pair a boots if he'd been able to put his under Ennis Del Mar's bed full time.
I wish I knew how to quit you
