Jack's boots in the fire
« on: Mar 13, 2006, 05:44 PM »
I'm sure this topic has been discussed already, and I have looked through previous threads to see but haven't come up with anything, so please bear with me if I'm repeating an already well-discussed topic:   :-[

The scene where Ennis and Jack are drinking by the fire, and Ennis starts to finally open up and talk to Jack, Jack sits back down and puts his boots in the fire.  Is there any significance to this or is it just a case of a drunken cowboy doing a silly thing just because he's drunk?  I seem to recall there being a mention of a meaning behind it, but I could be wrong, so please, anyone out there who knows and who can put me out of my misery, please help!   :-[

I thought it was just Jack positioning himself so that he can maximize the heat to warm his cold feet without getting his boots burnt in the fire!

I can think of some symbolism right now, but I'm probably wrong. He probably just didn't notice that his boot was in the fire. I don't wear boots often, but I do know that they keep your feet away from the weather pretty well.

He was deliberately putting his boots in the fire, as far as I could see!  It could be he likes to feel pain! Now that could be symbolic - all the pain he felt during the next 20 years - this was just a warm up!

It looked to me like his boot slipped into the fire, so he took it out and tried to find a comfortable spot for it. Realizing that there was no other way for his leg to stretch out, than with his boot in the fire, he gave in. He decided that the comfort of having his leg stretched out was more important than the possibility of burning his boot later on. Stretching out and being happy is more a pro for him than the possibility of being hurt down the road is a con. That's my little take on it, which I wasn't going to mention before. I'm probably over analyzing, though.

He was keeping his feet warm.  You notice he doesn't keep them too close of too long...

I was wondering about this too.. my friend pointed it out she was like

"um, why is he putting his boot in the fire?"

.. I don't know? Because it looks like he is, purposely.. so hahah, go Jack! Oh well I love him, insane or not :P
You and me together
Through the days and nights
I don't worry 'cause
Everything's gonna be all right
People keep talking
They can say what they like
But all I know is everything's gonna be all right..

I never realized how close together they were lying while they were drinking...no wonder they got horney! ::) :P ;D
This is the forest primeval.  The murmuring pines and the hemlocks, bearded with moss, and in garments green, indistinct in the twilight...but where are the hearts that beneath it leaped...

Yeah, at first he takes them out quickly, but then he sits them right in the fire and he doesn't take his foot out.

His feet are on the rocks around the fire.

I think we are talking of two different scenes here...
Here is the one I think we were talking about.... his feet come out and in quickly.. in order to pour the whisky, to get Ennis all boozed up for later that night, Jack has to scoot up and his left foot then goes in the fire...
The pic where them two are laying down... well the screen is so dark you can't see anything... unless you lighten up the screen capture.

yeah, cherrycake, this was the scene I was talking about originally....sorry if I caused confusion.  I don't think we're any closer to getting any meaning from what Jack does, but at least it was an excuse for you to put up the screen caps!!!

Slightly o/t, but don't you just love the way Ennis says "thank you" for Jack pouring him some whiskey? He's so well mannered that boy!

Greenfrog, this pic is amazing!  This is the first time I've seen this scene so well lit.  How were you able to take the darkness away?

I think it was donna who said she hadn't realised how close they had been lying, and I agree, I thought Ennis was lay out with his legs directly in front him, not actually side by side with Jack's......awwwww, that is just too cute!

slightly o/t, but I just ADORE this scene, I love Ennis drunk.  I love how he talks, how he tries to move, how he convinces himself he'll go up to the sheep but gives up very quickly.  I also love how, when Ennis points up to the sheep, Jack follows Ennis's finger to where he's pointing.  Then when Ennis asks for a blanket, Jack rushes inside the tent to get one, eager to do whatever he can for his Ennis!!!  It was just really, really sweet.

Now, I need to get back to discussing Jack's boots in the fire.....
