The dog on Brokeback Mountain
« on: Jan 15, 2006, 03:56 AM »
At first, I was very impressed by the choice of the dog, which is a not a very pretty dog but so fit into the situation. My only question is, do not think they ever fed the dog and having the dog working 24/7? But have to say, his performance is just so perfect.

From the story, "Three puppies belonging to one of the blue beelers went in a pack basket, the runt inside Jack's coat, for he loved a little dog." Not sure if it is the same dog as the book.

I am sure the dog was fed sometimes...you see one scene the dog was next to Jack while he was laying and taking a nap. The dog is happy.  :)

More than one dog..cf the picture below..

You need more than one dog, if there is only two horsemen to look after so many sheep!!!

Thanks for clarifying. I just knew I saw some dogs. All the characters were excellent to keep me capitivated throughout the movie. I will check the dogs out when I get the DVD.  ;D

I must admit I was thinking about the same question during my 2nd viewing -- "Do they feed the dog(s) at all?"  :P

They couldn't possibly have a dog like that in the movie: the sheep would all die of laughter. It would not be pretty.

Yes, I think the dogs fit into the situation.  I was surprised, though - I would think that the rancher would chose Border Collies for herding.

The dogs are Australian Cattle dogs.  As the name implies, they are primarily raised for cattle herding, but are also used for sheep herding.

I'm not sure what time the breed was introduced to the US.  They were first recognized as an official breed in Australia in 1903, but not in the US until 1980.

The original breed had color variations.  The blue coat was the most popular, and became known as blue heelers.

Australian Cattle dog is the official recognized breed name, but many people still call them Heelers.

Yes after I typed it I should have said although the dog was an ACD he was an ACD Blue Heeler, as there are different types such as RED as well.
Just like a Chocolate is a Labrador RETRIEVER and there are Black's and Yellows as well.

Most dog people that are really into sheep herding will call their dog a Blue or Red,at least here in New England.

... and then one by one the sheep would start the pink coiffure too!  Change some of those high mountain scenes LOL

The name blue heeler (used for an ACD) comes from the "blue merle" colouring, which is actually mottled grey, white and black. I found an abandoned Lousiana Catahoula Leopard Dog (state dog of Louisiana) while camping on the coast of Louisiana and the vets and everyone down there thought it was a blue heeler  or else a blue heeler mixed with a Cathoula. However, I did research and found out it was most likely just Catahoula, who also often have the blue merle gene. So other breeds can have the blue merle gene and are often mistaken as blue heelers. Mine looks a lot like the dogs in the movie except ears flop down halfway instead of straight up and she's less stocky, and is a tad taller and slimmer.  Of those who guess, about 1/3 of the people up here in Canada think she's a Catahoula, the rest an Australian Cattle dog (blue heeler.) Both breeds can be rather aggressive, ACDs because they have terrier in them and are bred to nip at kicking cattle's hoofs, Catahoula's as they have been viciously culled by the Cajun's to breed the most aggressive and efficient hunting dog (originally partly from southern red wolf).

Forgot to mention:

I think they may have chosen the Australian cattle dog in the movie as they needed a dog not only excellent in herding, but a good protector of the sheep from the coyotes. ACD's come from the Australian dingo (which is very vicious towards other animals while running in packs) and the bull terrier, to give it even more tenacity, along with four other breeds of less importance which I forget, thus the ACD is known for being vicious in packs also.  The Australian sheppherd dog, in contrast, is incredibly gentle, and the border collie is much more gentle than the ACD.

I dont know what breed they actually use in Wyoming though, or whether that is more cattle or sheep country.

There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can't fix it you've got to stand it.

Ennis, riding against the wind back to the sheep in the treacherous, drunken darken light, thought he'd never had such a good time, felt he could paw the white out of the moon.

Fine dogs. I have a Lapponian Herder (bitch), it's quite similar breed like Australian Kelpie, maybe a little lighter and more feminine than heelers, more gentle I mean, but very intelligent aswell  ;D Very suitable for agility and other activities not just sheep/cattle herding.  (Cattledogs are normally rougher, heavier and more agressive/dominant than sheepdogs, maybe "reindeers" are in between them ;D  I had a Golden Retriever also, but had to led her go about month ago - she was 15 years old already  :'( )

I havent heard of those dogs, but I've seen a lot of Australian sheppherd dogs, incredibly gentle, not at all like Australian cattle dogs. Cattle dogs have to nip at dangerously kicking cattle heels, a sheppard dog couldnt do that.  Golden retrievers are another incredibly gentle dog. I have a 10 year old labrador retriever too, just like golden retrievers in personality. His age is really showing, really limping badly today. It must be so sad losing your dog, but fifteen years isnt bad, your golden retriever had a long life. A lot of dogs die of cancer at 7 nowadays.

All kidding aside (which is hard to do after the pink poodle pic), some types of poodles have gotten a prissy reputation that they don't deserve.

My first partner had a black majestic standard poodle that was VERY protective (and about 70 pounds).  She slept in the hall by the apartment door every night.  Once, after a party, I had to take her to the park about 2am - somebody followed us.  The dog turned and started barking and growling viciously - I could barely contain her on the leash.  The guy was maybe 20 feet from me, and I told him if he didn't go away RIGHT NOW, I was going to let her have at him - he turned and ran like hell.

She also loved wearing hats and was a big Miami Vice fan!
