From oscarwatch.com

The SAG Awards are sometimes great indicators of who will go on to win the Oscar but this year, perhaps not. Many of the winners may not even end up being nominated for an Oscar. But there are some key races to pay attention to that may or may not indicate the winner.

Here are the nominees:

Actor:
Russell Crowe, Cinderella Man
Philip Seymour Hoffman, Capote
Heath Ledger, Brokeback Mountain
Joaquin Phoenix, Walk the Line
David Strathairn, Good Night, and Good Luck

Here is your biggest showdown of the night. 2005 was definitely another year for great male performances. Of these five, one will likely be dropped and replaced by another - I'm going to guess right now that Ralph Fiennes makes it in for The Constant Gardener. For this, we predict in the showdown between Heath, Joaquin and Philip that Hoffman will take the statue. Hoffman's Capote is a virtuoso performance, the kind that win awards. The more understated perfs don't win, generally speaking. What could change is if they really really love Brokeback Mountain and won't be able to restrain themselves from voting for Heath. But Hoffman is the one to beat. If Heath or someone else wins here they better have a great speech. If they can win over the audience at large they can win themselves an Oscar.

Actress:
Judi Dench, Mrs. Henderson Presents
Felicity Huffman, Transamerica
Charlize Theron, North Country
Reese Witherspoon, Walk the Line
Ziyi Zhang, Memoirs of a Geisha

Another showdown. Most likely, Ziyi, Charlize and perhaps Judi are out of the running, leaving big time popular actor's actor Felicity Huffman (in a showy role) up against pretty and legally blonde Reese Witherspoon (in a more subtle role but against type, and she really sings, and she's young). BUT if you add William H. Macy into the mix, Desperate Housewives, and Felicity's 60 Minutes get - it's hard to imagine she won't win. But Reese ought to be considered the frontrunner. We're gonna go with Felicity.

More predictions after the jump.

Comments are open for your own predictions - please no nasty commentary or you will be deleted. Thanks.

Supporting Actor:
Don Cheadle, Crash
George Clooney, Syriana
Matt Dillon, Crash
Paul Giamatti, Cinderella Man
Jake Gyllenhaal, Brokeback Mountain

Supporting Actor is one of the toughest calls of the night. But given George Clooney's weight gain, movie star likability, and all around breakout stardom, he has to take it. Paul Giamatti and Matt Dillon also have great shots here. If it were me, I'd be voting for Jake Gyllenhaal but we have to put our chips behind George. Just because they win the SAG doesn't mean they win the Oscar - in fact, it's more often they don't.

Supporting Actress:
Amy Adams, Junebug
Catherine Keener, Capote
Frances McDormand, North Country
Rachel Weisz, Constant Gardener
Michelle Williams, Brokeback

Again, another tough category to call - and it's anyone's guess. One thing we know for sure is that there is a good chance this category will look very different at the Oscars. But it's completely unpredictable at this point. We're going to continue to predict Rachel Weisz, however, as she gives the most powerful performance of the bunch -- Michelle Williams (if they're crazy for Brokeback), Amy Adams in a surprise upset (the two actresses tied for the Critics Choice awards).

Ensemble:
Brokeback Mountain
Capote
Crash
Good Night, and Good Luck
Hustle & Flow

This seems like a no-brainer and that Crash will take it home. BUT I'm changing my prediction at the last minute to Brokeback Mountain based on your comments! I agree that it seem unlikely it will go home empty handed. So, we'll go with Brokeback for the big win. But don't be surprised if it's Crash.

All of these predictions could be way off the mark - predicting the SAG ain't ever easy. They often pick unexpected winners, like Johnny Depp for Pirates.

SAG/Oscar Disconnect

Usually, the SAG winners somehow reflect Oscar nominations, in that if there are four non-Oscar-nominated actors and one that managed to snag the nod, that person will usually win the SAG. However, this year, SAG ballots will be turned in before the nominations are announced, making the SAG and Oscar rather unrelated. What happens at the SAG could influence who wins the Oscars, especially if there is lots of love flooding the room for someone, a standing ovation perhaps? Can Philip Seymour Hoffman get a standing ovation from that room full of actors? Or will they be so blown away by Brokeback Mountain it will be Heath Ledger who will win? Either way, we feel certain Crash will win the Ensemble pirze. More on the SAGs as we get closer to the ceremony.

are you up all night?

It's hard to predict who will win, i mean if you voted what would you vote for? I mean besides our favs obviously.
But in general all of life involves taste.  so who is best?  sometimes its obvious but it might not be to everyone here who
isn't as obsessed as we are.

I need to confess that I have not seen any of them in other movies. I can't compare objectively. From what I have read, I didn't lose much either.  ;D

They have to win ..they must win. If they don't, I would still give them my heart.

I saw almost all of them myself.

In Ennis "it aint gonna be that way" depressing style, I think we might get disappointed except with Jake.
Philip Seymore is an actors actor, beein the biz awhile etc   I think a SAG group will vote for him,

I think Jake will win however.

I am so looking forward to hearing the results of the SAG awards and I hope, I hope, I REALLY hope,  that the Screen Actors Guild give Jake Gyllenhaal the recognition he deserves for his portrayal of Jack. Heath Ledger was staggering to be sure but you have to have good supporting actors in order to create such a fine performance and besides, Jake had to look comfortable with the realities of the situation when he really was blazing new territory for himself just as much as Heath was. It has really annoyed me that everyone recognizes the quality of Mr. Ledger's "Ennis" but seem to not get that Jake had to be just as good for that to happen. And ditto for Michelle Williams.

BTW,  not to digress from discussing "Brokeback Mountain," the film we adore above all others,  but Jake had some utterly mythic moments in "Jarhead" if you have not seen that yet. It is still showing in some theaters I guess and comes out in video March 7th. Really good stuff. Sometimes I think we should recognize actors for what they've done for the whole year. This guys both reallly went the distance in 2005.

By DAVID GERMAIN,

LOS ANGELES - The cowboy love story "Brokeback Mountain" continued its drive toward a clean sweep of major Hollywood honors as it entered Sunday's Screen Actors Guild Awards as the clear favorite.

"Brokeback Mountain" led the guild's film contenders with four nominations: lead actor for Heath Ledger, supporting honors for
Michelle Williams and Jake Gyllenhaal, and overall cast performance.

The film looked like an odds-on front-runner for the cast prize, the guild's equivalent of a best-picture award. The other nominees for cast performance were the film biographies "Capote" and "Good Night, and Good Luck," the ensemble drama "Crash" and the rap music tale "Hustle & Flow."

Ledger, Williams and Gyllenhaal faced strong competition for the individual acting prizes. Philip Seymour Hoffman as author Truman Capote in "Capote" beat Ledger for the dramatic-actor prize at the Golden Globes and was considered a favorite for both the guild honor and the best actor Academy Award.

Williams lost out for supporting actress at the Golden Globes to Rachel Weisz in the murder thriller "The Constant Gardener," while Gyllenhaal faced supporting-actor Globe winner George Clooney for the oil-industry saga "Syriana."

Felicity Huffman, the Globe winner for dramatic actress for the transsexual comic drama "Transamerica," was a safe bet to take the same honor at the guild awards.

Huffman, an Emmy winner last year for "Desperate Housewives," has the inside track on the best-actress Oscar for "Transamerica." She also had a guild nomination for best actress in a TV comedy series for "Desperate Housewives."

"Brokeback Mountain" led the Jan. 16 Globes with four wins, among them best dramatic film and director for Ang Lee, who took the same prize Saturday from the Directors Guild of America.

Adapted from Annie Proulx's short story about old sheepherding buddies who conceal a homosexual affair from their families, "Brokeback Mountain" also has earned top honors from key critics groups and the Producers Guild of America.

The film is positioned to become the first explicitly gay-themed movie to win best picture at the Oscars, whose nominations come out Tuesday, with the awards presented March 5.

The SAG awards are one of the last major film honors before the Oscars and have a solid record of forecasting Oscar winners. All four guild acting recipients for 2004 —
Jamie Foxx for "Ray,"
Hilary Swank and
Morgan Freeman for "Million Dollar Baby" and
Cate Blanchett for "The Aviator" — went on to win Oscars.

The 12th annual SAG awards also were honoring former child star Shirley Temple Black for life achievement.

Guild nominees were chosen by 4,200 randomly selected union members. The union's full membership of more than 100,000 was eligible to vote for winners.
